Thoughts about James 4:5

In my early Christian days, I had the picture of the Holy Spirit being the phone line to heaven. Because of Him, I was able to reach the Father, talk to Jesus, and hear from Them. The Scripture tells us that God is always longing to communicate with us. Using this picture brings up questions – Is my phone muted at times when I do not want to be disturbed, or am I ignoring the call? Are other apps, more important, drawing over this connection? Do I allow or deny God access to all other apps? This setting is the only one to claim Jesus is Lord over my life; Lord means the one in control. Does God have administrative powers, so to speak? I tried my best to do this in modern terms, not sure I got it all right.

In old-fashioned terms, it would be – Do I lay the receiver next to the phone at times? Is my cord long enough to take it everywhere I go? Do I pick up every time it rings? Do I call in often or only if in desperate need?

No matter how I look at it, God wants to be part of my life all the time! Anything I do without Him makes Him jealous, and His jealousy is godly jealousy. This Scripture moved me deeply. God caused the Holy Spirit to dwell in me; how wonderful is that?

I hope this stirs your heart. God created us and is longing for us to interact with Him!

The whole verse goes like this - Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”? I wondered where the reference verse is in the Old Testament as I read it. I found none. Then it dawned on me; the whole OT is the description of this verse. Starting in Genesis, God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness, and then He was spending time with Adam and Eve in the garden. Even after the fall, God’s desire was still the same. Leviticus 26:12 says, I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you will be my people. Throughout the Bible, the stories witness this desire, all the way into the New Testament where it says in 2Corinthians 6:18, I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters.

Be blessed and satisfy His desire!
